Chaukhtatgyi Paya, with its 65-meter-long reclining Buddha, is not only a must-see, its sheer size and rich details make it one of the most memorable stops in all of Yangon. The Buddha’s bright white face hovers some 16 meters above the ground and is decorated with brilliant red lips and bright blue eye shadow. Its golden robes drape down to the statue’s feet, which are covered in 108 intricately designed lakshanas representing each of the noble characteristics of the Buddha. SIGHTSEEING : Shwedagon Pagoda

The Shwedagon Pagoda is one of the most famous pagodas in the world and it is certainly the main attraction of Yangon, Myanmar’s capital city.Locally known as Shwedagon Zedi Daw The, it sits atop of a hill and is 99 meters high. It can be seen from most places of Yangon day and night as the golden roof illuminates the city.According to some, the pagoda is 2,600 years old, making Shwedagon the oldest pagoda in the world. The main gold-plated dome is topped by a stupa containing over 7,000 diamonds, rubies, topaz and sapphires, the whole giddy concoction offset by a massive emerald positioned to reflect the last rays of the setting sun.

There is little wonder that the Shwedagon is referred to in Myanmar as "The crown of Burma."As Myanmar's most revered shrine it has always been customary for families, mendicants and followers of the Buddha to make the pilgrimage to the Shwedagon

The architectural style shows Mon and North Indian influence.

The temple’s most distinctive feature is the gilded sikhara, the tower like spire on top of the pagoda. The reflection of the gilded sikhara is visible from miles away over the Bagan plains. After dark the Ananda Pagoda is lit up by spotlights creating a mystical atmosphere. The Ananda was damaged during the 1975 earthquake, and has been extensively restored since then.

The Irrawaddy River has shaped Burma's history it's the country's economic lifeblood and inseparable from Burmese spiritual life. It recedes during the country's dry season until its banks sit exposed and cracking in the sun, only to return each spring with the monsoon, coming to life to flood fields and replenish the country with water, fish and fertile soil.

A lovely way to end a day of temple sightseeing is a Sunsun Boat Ride. The boat will take you to a spot downstream where you can witness the sunset in mid-river while drinking tea. Relaxing and enjoyable.
